Real Men Read Youth Literacy Program

The Raleigh Alumni Chapter (RAC) Real Men Read program is designed to promote literacy and foster positive self-image amongst urban youth, especially younger (K-5) African American and Latino boys. In conjunction with the Greater Raleigh Guide Right Program — a Kappa Charitable Trust Fund, Inc. initiative — RAC adopted Bugg Elementary school. At the time the program was started in 2015, the school ranked 1357 out of 1407 elementary schools in North Carolina. RAC was concerned by the statistics showing that young boys are more interested in sports than books, so it enlisted its membership to read to kindergarteners; serving a dual purpose to promote the love of reading and provide positive male images amongst the students. The program further aims to facilitate reading readiness in the children’s educational development, language development — expanding their vocabulary, how to read with expression, develop a passion for reading and becoming a lifelong learners.
